*Please note that we do have several people double-cast. Directors have already modified Tuesday's schedule to accommodate these folks. Our narrators will need to attend Monday’s rehearsal to watch the full run of the show, and will be working with Ginny on Tuesday to smooth transitions between plays. We look forward to seeing you all tomorrow at 6pm at Theatrikos. Please bring water, a snack, and clothes that allow you mobility. We will be doing a full run-through, so anticipate staying the full three hours. Again, thank you to all who auditioned!

Just a note to let everyone know that there will be no tickets issued for this event. Both the dress rehearsal on Wednesday the 10th and the performance on Thursday the 11th will be open to an audience. Admission will be governed by donation at the door.

This year's judge, Kerri Quinn, has chosen seven winning plays. Thanks to Kerri for spending a week deliberating over many plays. Here's a breakdown of this year's Playwriting Showcase:

Friday, May 29th: Deadline to submit your ten-minute play for contest consideration (see submission guidelines post below).

Saturday, June 6th: Winning plays and playwrights will be announced on this blog and via email no later than this date.

Sunday, June 7th: Auditions for those interested in being onstage in one (or more!) of the winning plays. Auditions will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. downstairs at Theatrikos.

Wednesday, June 10th: Dress rehearsal open to audience. Theatrikos at 7:00 p.m.

Thursday, June 11th: Dramatic staged readings of all winning plays. Come see some new, original theatre and meet the playwrights! Theatrikos at 8:00 p.m.

NAPS/Thin Air/Book Festival Reading

This coming Sunday, April 26th, NAPS is hooking up with Thin Air Magazine and Northern Arizona Book Festival for a literary reading. Come see a dramatic reading of last year's winning play, "Pork Belly Futures," and stick around to hear from some new, exciting writers from around town.

TIME: 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
ADMISSION: FREE!!!

NAPS 2009 Submission Guidelines

A ten-minute play should be no more than 1600 words. Word count includes dialogue and any stage directions.

For each play entered for contest consideration, there is a $10 submission fee. Please include in your submission materials a check made payable to "Theatrikos Theatre."

Plays should be written for no more than 3 actors. Dramatic monologues and co-authored plays are acceptable. Multiple submissions are also acceptable.

Please format your play according to the standards of writing for the stage. For information on formatting guidelines, please visit http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/howtoformatastageplay

Winning plays will receive a staged reading but we cannot accommodate elaborate props, so the artistry should reside in the dialogue, not the staging.

Plays should be RECEIVED no later than 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 29th. Plays may be mailed to:

Or they may be dropped off in NAU's Liberal Arts Building (attn: Ann Cummins), Room 140.

Plays should have two title pages, one with the title, the author’s name, and the author’s contact information, including phone number and/or e-mail address. The second should only list the play’s title as submissions will be judged anonymously. If you want your play returned, include an SASE. Otherwise, plays will not be returned.

Winners will be notified via email and posted on this blog no later than June 7, 2009.

Thank you to all who participated (writers, actors, volunteers) in the inaugural year of Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase! I hope you're ready to make NAPS 2009 even better. Please take note of the following:

Last year's contest judge, Warren Doody, will be teaching the 3-week summer playwriting course this year. The course title is ENG 499: The Art of Playwriting. For information on registration and enrollment visit NAU's website at www.nau.edu.

The contest deadline for NAPS 2009 is Friday, May 29th. See blogpost on submission guidelines for NAPS 2009 for more details on how to submit your original ten-minute play(s) for consideration in our contest.

NAPS 2009 will be holding auditions for actors at Theatrikos Theatre (downstairs) on Sunday, June 7th. Stay tuned for details.

And finally, the winning plays of NAPS 2009 will be brought to life in an evening of dramatic staged readings on Thursday, June 11th at 8:00 p.m. at Theatrikos Theatre. Hope to see you there!

Thin Air, November Issue

Next month, the creative writing graduate students at NAU will release the Fall issue of their literary magazine, Thin Air. As you may remember, the first-place winner of the Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase will have her play appear in this wonderful publication. Congratulations to Sandra Raymond and her remarkable ten-minute play, "Pork Belly Futures." Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase is a summer collaboration between NAU's Creative Writing Department and Theatrikos Theatre Company. During the 3-week summer school session at NAU, creative writing professor Ann Cummins is offering an intensive course in writing ten-minute plays. The course, ENG 499, will conclude with a contest open to all community members and judged by playwright and former Flagstaff resident, Warren Doody.

Warren will anonymously judge all ten-minute plays submitted to the contest and choose the best ten for a staged dramatic reading at Theatrikos on June 12th.

If you are an actor, student, or lover of the stage, please consider participating in the inaugural year of Northern Arizona Playwriting Showcase.
